In what many media observers are calling "a political nod to a reliably Democratic voting bloc that in recent weeks has grown frustrated with the White House's slow movement on their priorities", President Obama is said to be ready to announce today that he is extending health-care benefits to the same-sex partners of Federal workers.
This comes on the heels of several pro-gay Democrats withdrawing their financial support for an upcoming DNC meeting, as well as increased whining by the LGBT lobby that BHO has not followed through on their agenda quickly enough. It also comes after BHO has refused to amend the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, and his Justice Department has taken the position that the Defense of Marriage Act is valid and enforceable, including that any state that does not recognize same-sex marriage is not required to recognize such a union from a state that does.
Of course, the LGBT bunch isn't at all convinced that BHO has been a little busy dealing with a tanked economy, growing unrest in the Middle East fueled by Iran's crooked election, North Korea playing with fire next to a nuclear fuse, and the dozens of other issues that cross the Oval Office desk every day. Not that I'm supporting BHO's policies, mind you, but I suspect that the LGBT folks are not even on his Top Ten list these days. The LGBT, however, like many other groups in the liberal coalition, have expected they will get theirs pretty quickly in the aftermath of BHO's election, and when it has not been forthcoming, they resort to their favorite tactic, withholding contribution money, and their second-favorite tactic, public whining.
So, even though he has publicly expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage, BHO is going to grant benefits to same-sex partners. I can safely predict this will be an administrative nightmare, beginning with defining at what point in a relationship two individuals become qualifying "partners." The next hurdle will come when Billy Joe and Bobby Sue, a straight couple, one of whom is a Federal employee, file a discrimination suit because they are denied health coverage even though they have been shacking up for three years.
Meanwhile, we hear the Federal bureaucracy is going to expand even further with the institution of a new Federal agency to regulate credit practices. We are awash with Czars who answer to no one but BHO, and new agencies are sprouting like weeds. The Federal government grows like an amoebic monolith, swallowing everything in sight in its regulatory net, and ignoring the Constitutional restrictions on Federal power as if they are meaningless political theory. And now all of those Federal workers in same-sex relationships are being granted a benefit that even their straight co-workers don't get. Not even one year into a BHO Administration, and it's already a runaway train of big government and intrusion into our lives. Glory, glory, hallelujah.....
