If you needed any more proof to conclude that the woman who is second in line for the Presidency is a complete idiot, you've got it today. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is now claiming that the opposition to the Ground Zero mosque is a right wing conspiracy being "ginned up" for political purposes, and she has called for an investigation into the funding behind such opposition.
"There is no question that there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some," she said Tuesday, "and I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded."
On Wednesday, Pelosi's office said that she is not calling for a "congressional inquiry," though she still supports looking into the funding of the mosque's opponents. "I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that 'We agree with the (Anti-Defamation League) that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center," she said.
Actually, I hope they do figure it out, so I can know where to send my invoice for my services in opposing the Ground Zero mosque.
Speaker Pelosi, last time I checked the Constitution, which you and Comrade Obama are working so hard to destroy, still contains a First Amendment that allows for free speech. There is a major difference between, on one hand, looking into clandestine funding for a group that has never had more than $100,000 to its name now wanting to build a multi-million dollar Islamic shrine in Manhattan, and on the other hand, a substantial number of Americans voicing opposition to said project.
I have detailed the issues, as I see them, in several previous posts on this site, as well as in my column that will run in the Georgetown News-Graphic on August 19. There are ample questions into why an Islamic group wants to build this mosque two blocks from Ground Zero, and name it for a symbol of Islamic conquest over Christians. What is proposed is literally and figuratively a huge toehold for a mysterious group on prime U.S. real estate.
The opposition, however, is many Americans, no matter how organized, voicing their offense and opposition to the site for the proposed mosque, and at the double standard propounded by Pelosi and her ilk who fall all over themselves to avoid "offending" Islam, while doing nothing about the dozens of atrocities perpetrated in the name of Islam on a weekly basis.
Nancy Pelosi is a complete and utter idiot who should be summarily dispatched back to her mansion in California, so she can botox herself into oblivion. As Speaker of the House, she is a clear and present danger to the United States and its people.
"Speaker Pelosi, last time I checked the Constitution, which you and Comrade Obama are working so hard to destroy, still contains a First Amendment that allows for free speech."
And freedom of religion.
But I think the damage is done already. For a month now we have made it abundantly clear to the world that a substantial number of Americans, perhaps the majority, consider Islam our enemy, and that religious liberty is not really a fundamental right but something we will only allow Moslems if they will just let us dictate when and where they can gather.
"Conservative" used to mean a commitment to individual freedom. Now it just seems to mean keeping uppity Moslems in their place.
The irony, of course, is that Moslems tend to be small businessmen, and to be rather conservative, in the old, dying sense. But I suspect they will not forget those who are so quick to treat all American Moslems as closet killers and traitors.

Rick:
You're falling back on the old racism thing, when that has nothing to do with it. And the freedom of religion thing, which is likewise not relevant to my point, which is RESPECT.
I would also note that the rest of the world is quite aware that a significant portion of the Muslim world considers America the "Great Satan", a point that is lost on Americans like you.
You, Rick, not me, used the term "closet killers and traitors."
Again, my point is that why don't the sponsors of the Manhattan Mosque have to respect the feelings of the 9/11 survivors, when Americans fall all over themselves to not "offend" Muslims?
Answer that question, Rick, instead of spouting the same drivel from CNN that the rest of the liberal community is shouting.

"why don't the sponsors of the Manhattan Mosque have to respect the feelings of the 9/11 survivors, when Americans fall all over themselves to not "offend" Muslims?"
First, I don't think anyone is falling all over themselves not to offend Muslims. It's been a while since I've seen such vilification of any group in America.
Second, the idea that Muslims should vacate Lower Manhattan because of 9/11 rests on the assumption that Islam destroyed the World Trade Center. But it didn't. It's the same ignorance that made a majority of Americans think that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11, or the remarkable 18% of Americans who believe that the president is a Muslim. Demagogues exploit ignorance; statesmen fight it.
I do not defend the religion of Islam. I am a Catholic Christian. Does Islam misunderstand the person of Christ in considering him a mere prophet? Yes, undoubtedly(though it's closer to the truth than, say, Mormonism). Is contemporary Islam linked with political despots in the Middle East? Yes--but Christianity once seemed linked with European absolutism, and we shook it off eventually. So if Christianity, which I consider a divine establishment, could accomplish such a change, surely Islam can do so as well, as a merely human construct.
But as I said above, I think al-Qaeda has already won this round. We've done its work well in letting Moslems know that a lot of Americans don't want them here. I don't know what's particularly "conservative"about that.

Rick, I think you have inadvertantly hit on the crux of this whole problem, as well as many others with which we all suffer. You did so when you used the word "statesman". There are no "statesmen" any more, on either side of the aisle. Partisanship and "gotcha" politics have taken over in Washington and elsewhere. There is little doubt that some of the uproar over the Manhattan mosque is politically-motivated, on both sides of the aisle.
I could give a fig about politics, but I do stand by my comments. I think you have way over-shot the mark in your condemnations. I have no problem with Islam being practiced in this country, nor any other religion, including Mormonism. I think there probably are a lot of moderate Muslims who would like to live in peace. But where has been the outrage from them about the acts of the radicals? The radicals can only be stopped if and when the moderates say "no more" and expell them from their midst.
And Rick, please, if you gain nothing else from this debate, please discover that simply because I or any other conservative may disagree with you does not render us "ignorant." It is a sad, bad habit of liberals to throw sticks and stones instead of simply making their argument based on facts.

For myself, I think the words "liberal" and "conservative" are the most useless terms around.
The first amendment has been around for about 220 years. So I don't know what's particularly "liberal" or "progressive" about suggesting that the values it embodies should be honored as much in the 21st century as in the 18th.
I am "liberal" on some issues and "conservative" on others. So I don't know what that makes me. The only two blogs where I've been told to leave and never come back have been "progressive" ones whose "inclusive" norms apparently weren't open enough to include my impossibly reactionary views on the blogs' pet topic.
I think it's a shame that people just get thrown in the "liberal" box or the "conservative" box. I myself think the labels themselves are illusory.
